On April 7, 2023, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) announced that, as of May 9, 2023, it would terminate the relief measures implemented in response to COVID-19, including flexible acceptance of procedures taken after the expiry of designated or statutory periods as well as flexible acceptance of extensions of designated periods and remedial measures for trial and opposition cases. Procedures for which designated or statutory periods expire on or after May 9, 2023 will be handled in accordance with the extant pre-pandemic framework.
